Hægt er að flokka API hlíf í margar gerðir, svo sem J55, K55, N80, L80, C90, T95 og P110. Þessar hlífðareinkenni sýna sérstaka einkenni hvað varðar styrk, tæringarþol og þjónustulíf, sem gerir kleift að velja út frá sérstökum olíueldisskilyrðum og kröfum um útdrátt.
Til dæmis eru J55 og K55 hlífar fyrst og fremst notaðar á grunnu eða miðlungs - dýpi og býður upp á mikinn styrk og framúrskarandi plastleika.
